What hinterland soil means for new turf

Heavier soil changes the rules

Unlike the sand on the coast, much of Nambour sits on clay and clay-loam that holds water. That is good in a dry spell, but after a run of summer storms it can stay wet for days, and it sets hard when it dries out. Many blocks slope, so rain runs off before it soaks in, and older streets have big trees that shade lawns for much of the day. Good preparation, drainage and the right variety for shade matter more here than watering does.

Why Sir Walter Suits So Many Nambour Yards

Shade is the most common reason a Nambour lawn thins out.

Sir Walter is the most shade-tolerant of our three varieties, with a soft, broad leaf and strong runners that hold a sloping yard together. At $15.50/m², it is the variety we suggest most often for established hinterland gardens.

Empire Zoysia: sunny slopes you would rather not mow

On a steep, sunny bank, mowing is hard work. Empire Zoysia grows slowly and densely, so it needs cutting less often. It is also $15.50/m².

Wintergreen couch: big sunny areas on a budget

For a large, open block with no shade, Wintergreen couch at $7.00/m² is the economical choice.

Preparing a Nambour Block for Turf

On clay, preparation decides whether a new lawn thrives or sits in water.

Check drainage first: if water lies on the surface after rain, fix it before you returf. Our waterlogged lawn guide explains how.
Break up the clay: loosen compacted ground and add a layer of turf underlay soil so the roots can spread; see our guide to laying turf on clay.

Laying Turf on Clay and Slopes in Nambour

Laying on hinterland clay and slopes takes a slightly different approach from laying on coastal sand.

Lay across the slope

On sloping ground, lay rows across the slope rather than down it, and peg the rolls on steep banks so they do not slide before they root.

Lay the day it arrives

Have the soil level, firm and just damp. Clay that is too wet smears and compacts, so don't work it straight after heavy rain.

Water deeply, less often

Clay holds water, so avoid keeping it soggy. Follow our watering schedule for new turf and adjust after rain.

Watch the shade

In the first months, keep leaf litter off the new lawn and trim low branches so shaded areas get as much light as possible.
