Turf Supplies Carindale: Heat-Hardy Lawns for Big, Open Family Blocks
Wintergreen and Stadium couch cut to order at Woodford, delivered and laid across the eastern suburbs
Carindale still has what most of Brisbane has lost: genuinely large, sunny backyards on rolling foothill blocks. They also have heavy clay underneath, hot exposed summers, and enough lawn area that choosing the wrong grass gets expensive fast. Our turf supplies Carindale service is built for exactly that: heat-tolerant couch that recovers from cricket, trampolines and dogs, graded and laid so the slope drains instead of scouring. Cut fresh at our Woodford farm and delivered within 24–48 hours, supply-only or fully installed by our own crew. Book a free on-site measure and we will quote the whole job, turf and labour, before anything is ordered. Call 1800 761 334, Monday to Friday 6am–4pm.
Big lawns are a different problem to small ones. When a backyard runs to several hundred square metres, the per-square-metre decision compounds: pick a premium buffalo you did not need and the bill doubles; pick a grass that cannot take Carindale's full afternoon sun and you are re-turfing patches every summer. Most enquiries for turf supplies Carindale homeowners send us are replacements, an established lawn that has thinned under wear, gone hard and lumpy over clay, or lost the fight after a pool, deck or extension.
We grow all five varieties ourselves at Woodford, so we can be honest about where the money should go. On a large full-sun Carindale block that is usually into ground preparation and drainage rather than into the most expensive grass on the list. Free measure, no obligation, and the number you are quoted is the number.
Local knowledge
Why it matters here
On a large block, the difference between a good turf job and a poor one shows up in the parts you cannot see: whether the ground was ripped and graded before laying, whether the falls carry storm runoff off the lawn, and whether the slabs arrived fresh enough to root within days. Hancey's has grown Queensland turf as a family business for more than 30 years, and we deliver and lay with our own people, so the person who quotes the Carindale job is accountable for how it looks a year later.
Scale is also where grower-direct pricing counts. Across a 300m² lawn, the gap between Wintergreen couch at $7.00/m² and a premium buffalo at $15.50/m² is significant money, and on an open, full-sun block, the couch is very often the better-performing choice, not the compromise.
Clay, slope and sun: what shapes a Carindale lawn. Carindale occupies the foothill country of Brisbane's south-east, about 10km from the CBD, sitting on Cleveland Road and Bulimba Creek with the Gateway Motorway forming its eastern boundary. It was originally part of Belmont Shire and the suburb of Belmont; the Carindale housing estate (named after the adjoining suburb of Carina) went on the market in 1976 and the suburb was formally named four years later. Its first development phase ran through the 1970s and 1980s around the shopping centre and westward to Bulimba Creek, on lots noticeably larger than the inner-city norm, and the 2021 Census still records 88.7% of dwellings as separate houses. Backyards here are big, open and, because the estates were cleared for development, short on the mature canopy that shades inner-city lawns.
Two local conditions do most of the damage. The first is sun and heat: an unshaded eastern-suburbs backyard takes full afternoon exposure through a Queensland summer, which finishes off shade-bred grasses and any lawn on a thin root zone. The second is the soil. Blocks through this catchment commonly carry heavy, reactive clay that swells when wet and shrinks and cracks when dry, so a lawn laid straight onto ungraded clay gets a hard, uneven surface, poor infiltration during storm rain, and water running across the top rather than into it.
Slope multiplies both. On a foothill block, runoff concentrates and scours before turf has knitted, leaving open joins and washed-out low points. For homeowners, that is the difference between a lawn that carries the kids and the dog for a decade and one that needs patching every spring.
So our turf supplies Carindale jobs start below the grass. We rip compacted clay to break the pan, blend topsoil to build a root zone the clay alone cannot provide, and set falls that move water off the lawn and toward existing drainage rather than against the house or the retaining wall. Then we lay heat-tolerant couch across the open areas (Wintergreen for value, Stadium where wear is heaviest) and switch to Sir Walter or Palmetto buffalo only where the block genuinely runs shaded.

Common local challenges
The challenge
Full afternoon sun finishes off the wrong grass
Carindale's estates were cleared for development, so backyards are open and short on the mature canopy that shades inner-city lawns, and they take full western exposure through summer.
Shade-bred varieties and any lawn on a thin root zone burn off in the heat, and on a large block that failure is expensive to repeat.
We put heat-tolerant couch across the open areas (Wintergreen for value, Stadium where wear is heaviest) and only switch to buffalo where the block genuinely runs shaded.
The challenge
Reactive clay that sheds water instead of absorbing it
Blocks through the Bulimba Creek catchment commonly carry heavy clay that swells when wet, then shrinks and cracks as it dries.
A lawn laid straight onto ungraded clay gets a hard, uneven surface and roots shallowly, and storm rain runs across the top rather than into it.
We rip to break the compaction pan and blend topsoil to build a root zone the clay alone cannot provide, before a slab is laid.
The challenge
Slope turns runoff into scouring
Carindale is foothill country rising away from Bulimba Creek, so most blocks carry a real fall.
Runoff concentrates and scours before the turf has knitted, opening joins and washing out the low points in the first storm season.
We re-set the falls so water moves off the lawn toward existing drainage rather than against the house or a retaining wall, and lay across the contour with staggered joins.
The challenge
On a big lawn, the variety decision compounds
Backyards here run to several hundred square metres, well above the Brisbane average, on lots laid out in the 1970s and 1980s.
Across a 300m² lawn the gap between $7.00/m² and $15.50/m² is real money, and a variety that cannot take the sun means patching every summer on top of it.
We size the recommendation to the block and split the order where part of the yard is shaded, rather than putting one premium variety across the whole area.
The challenge
Family wear concentrates in the same places
88.7% of Carindale dwellings are separate houses at a median age of 43, established family blocks that take cricket, trampolines and dogs.
Goal mouths, trampoline circles and the dog's corner wear through to soil, and a grass that does not self-repair needs patching rather than recovering.
Stadium couch is the harder-wearing upgrade for heavy-traffic lawns, and farm pickup makes small repair top-ups affordable between full jobs.
Our services
What we can do for you
Full site preparation, delivery and lay
The complete job for a large replacement lawn: remove the old surface, rip the compacted clay, correct the falls, bring in topsoil and lay.
On Carindale's sloping blocks this is what stops water channelling down the yard and taking the new lawn's root zone with it.
We walk the block, note where the house and boundary trees throw afternoon shade, and split the order if needed, couch across the open lawn, buffalo down the shaded southern side.

Hancey's Turf Supplies is a family turf grower at 2 Hart Rd, Woodford, and the Hancey family has grown turf in Queensland for more than 30 years. All five varieties are grown on the farm, cut to order, and delivered and laid by Hancey's own crew rather than a subcontracted one. The same wear-tolerance problem shows up at larger scale in the team's commercial and sports-turf work: Naric Pty Ltd's director records on Hancey's own site that the business handled imported growing medium, laser levelling and the supply and installation of washed and unwashed turf for the Samford Football Precinct, and Universal Civil Contracting has used Hancey's as its turfing subcontractor since 2012. Carindale sits inside the Brisbane and Redlands delivery region served from Woodford.

Frequently asked questions
What is the best turf for a large full-sun Carindale backyard?
Wintergreen couch at $7.00/m² for most blocks. It thrives in heat, self-repairs quickly from wear, and keeps the cost sensible across a big area. Where the lawn takes heavy sport or dog traffic, Stadium couch is the tougher upgrade; it is grown on the farm but not currently priced online, so ask for a figure with your measure. Both want around seven hours of direct sun, which open Carindale yards comfortably deliver.
Part of my yard is shaded by the house and boundary trees. What then?
We split the order. Couch across the open lawn, and Sir Walter or Palmetto soft-leaf buffalo through the shaded strip, since buffalo holds colour on as little as three to four hours of direct light. It costs a little more than a single-variety order but avoids the thin, patchy band that appears when couch is pushed into shade it cannot handle.
Do I need site preparation on clay?
Almost always, if the existing surface is hard or uneven. Reactive clay shrinks, cracks and sheds water rather than absorbing it, so turf laid directly on it roots shallowly. We rip to break the compaction pan, blend topsoil to create a workable root zone and re-set the falls. We will tell you honestly at the free measure whether your block needs it.
How much does a large lawn cost to have laid?
It depends on area, variety and how much preparation the ground needs. Turf runs from $7.00/m² to $15.50/m², delivery is $200, and installation carries a $440 minimum. Site preparation is quoted separately once we have seen the block. You get one written figure covering the whole job. We do not price the turf and leave the rest open.
Can I lay it myself and just buy the turf?
Yes, and on a large block the labour saving is real. We deliver cut-to-order slabs to your address and you lay to your own timetable. Have the ground prepared and watered before delivery day, and plan to lay within 24 hours of the drop, stacked turf heats up quickly in a Brisbane summer.
How long until the new lawn can be used?
Keep foot traffic light for the first two to three weeks while roots knit into the soil, watering daily in warm weather. Couch establishes quickly and a spring or autumn lay is usually taking normal family use within a month. Hold off on heavy play (cricket, trampolines, the dog's favourite corner) until the turf resists a gentle lift at the edge.
