Most of the suburb was developed from the 1970s onward as detached housing on generous lots, and unlike the inner suburbs it has largely kept that form, the 2021 Census still records it as overwhelmingly separate houses. Backyards here are big, open and, because the estates were cleared for development, short on the mature canopy that shades inner-city lawns.
Two local conditions do most of the damage. The first is sun and heat: an unshaded eastern-suburbs backyard takes full afternoon exposure through summers that regularly push into the mid-thirties, which finishes off shade-bred grasses and any lawn on a thin root zone. The second is the soil. Much of the catchment carries reactive clay that swells when wet and shrinks and cracks when dry, so a lawn laid straight onto ungraded clay gets a hard, uneven surface, poor infiltration during storm rain, and water running across the top rather than into it.
