East Brisbane is a compact, two-suburb pocket of Brisbane City — just bayside Wynnum and inland Carindale — yet the ground underfoot could hardly differ more between them, and that gap decides which grass belongs on your block. Wynnum fronts Moreton Bay about 13 kilometres east of the CBD, with five kilometres of open foreshore, so its lawns live with windborne salt and salt spray that settle on the leaf and build up in the root zone. Carindale, inland to the west, is a large-block family suburb — roughly 89% separate houses on big, open lots, most of them owner-occupied — where salt is a non-issue but full sun and heavy foot traffic from kids and pets are the daily reality. Two suburbs, two completely different turf problems.

That contrast is what drives the variety choice, and there's independent backing for it. Turf Queensland's salt-tolerance ranking puts zoysia highest, couch only slightly behind and buffalo least tolerant overall — with tougher buffalo cultivars like Palmetto sitting at the more tolerant end. So a salt-exposed block near the Wynnum foreshore leans to Empire Zoysia or Palmetto Buffalo, while an open, full-sun Carindale lawn is better served by a hard-wearing couch such as Wintergreen or Stadium. In a region this small, matching the grass to the street is most of the job.
