Sir Walter buffalo is the most shade tolerant turf for Brisbane and Sunshine Coast yards, Empire Zoysia suits part shade and Wintergreen couch needs full sun. Use our hourly sun audit to find out which one your yard can grow.

The best shade tolerant grass for Brisbane and Sunshine Coast yards is Sir Walter soft-leaf buffalo: aim for 4 or more hours of direct sun a day, with 3 hours as the bare minimum. Empire Zoysia has medium shade tolerance (40–50%) and suits part shade. Wintergreen couch needs 7 or more hours, so it is a full-sun grass.
Use this zoysia and buffalo shade tolerance chart to match your yard to a variety. The sun figures mean direct sun on the grass, not bright light or sun filtered through leaves.
| Variety | Direct sun needed (guide) | Shade tolerance | Mowing in shade | Best spot | Price | Buy |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Sir Walter buffalo | 3–4 hours (4+ recommended) | High (the licensor rates it at over 75%) | Keep it at the top of its height range | Side passages, under high tree canopy, south-facing yards | $15.50/m² | Shop Sir Walter |
| Empire Zoysia | At least 4 hours; more is better | Medium (40–50%) | Top of its 25–50mm range | Part-shade front yards, coastal and low-maintenance lawns | $15.50/m² | Shop Empire Zoysia |
| Wintergreen couch | 7 hours+ | Low | Not recommended in shade | Open, sunny yards and play areas | $7.00/m² | Shop Wintergreen |
| No turf | Under 3 hours | – | – | Mulch, pavers, gravel or a shade garden | – | – |
We grow all three varieties on our farm at Woodford and deliver them across Brisbane and the Sunshine Coast. The Empire Zoysia shade percentage comes from our product specifications. The Sir Walter hours are where the two main sources differ. The variety’s licensor, Lawn Solutions Australia, says Sir Walter can thrive with as little as three hours of sunlight a day. Turf Queensland recommends at least 4 hours for any shade-tolerant lawn (more on that below). We treat 3 hours as the bare minimum and recommend 4 or more, because shade in our humid climate also brings disease pressure.
Most people overestimate how much sun their yard gets, so measure it first. Turf Queensland’s advice on shade areas and natural turfgrass is that a lawn of a shade-tolerant variety needs at least 4 hours of direct sunlight, preferably between 10am and 2pm. Midday sun is the strongest, so two hours around noon is worth more than two hours at 7am.

A yard that looks sunny in November can be half in shade by June. Brisbane sits at about 27.5°S; in June the midday sun is only about 39° above the horizon, so shadows from fences and double-storey walls reach much further into the yard than in summer. The Sunshine Coast is much the same.
Warm-season grasses also grow slowly in winter, so if a spot is borderline in summer, assume it will be worse in winter. Shaded turf also roots more slowly, so check the best time to lay turf in South East Queensland before you order.
Turf Queensland ranks the warm-season grasses for shade in this order: buffalo, then zoysia, then kikuyu, seashore paspalum and couch.
Sir Walter is a soft-leaf buffalo. Its broad leaves and dense, low habit help it make the most of limited light, and it is the most shade-tolerant variety we grow. It still grows well in full sun, so it suits yards that are sunny at the front and shaded down the side. It is dense, soft underfoot and repairs small worn patches with its runners. Sir Walter buffalo is $15.50/m², cut to order at Woodford.
Empire Zoysia has medium shade tolerance: 40–50%, which is higher than couch and kikuyu. It suits part-shade yards that still get plenty of direct sun, ideally around the middle of the day; give it at least the 4 hours Turf Queensland recommends, and more if you can. Where it really shines is low maintenance: it needs far less mowing than couch and has high salt tolerance, which suits exposed coastal spots such as Redcliffe and Maroochydore. In heavy shade it thins out, so do not push it into a spot that suits Sir Walter better. Empire Zoysia is $15.50/m².
Couch is the least shade-tolerant of the common lawn grasses. Wintergreen couch needs at least 7 hours of sun a day. In return it is hard-wearing, recovers quickly in full sun and costs $7.00/m². In a part-shaded yard, use Wintergreen in the sun and Sir Walter in the shade.
You will see other soft-leaf buffalos recommended for shade, including Palmetto and Sapphire. Turf Queensland notes that Palmetto has shown very good shade tolerance among the buffalo grasses. We no longer grow Palmetto; Sir Walter is the soft-leaf buffalo we grow and deliver. We do not grow kikuyu either: it ranks below buffalo and zoysia for shade and is better suited to large, sunny yards. Our kikuyu vs buffalo comparison covers the full trade-off.
Tall fescue and “shade” seed blends are common in cooler southern states. In South East Queensland, cool-season grasses like fescue struggle through our hot, humid summers, so they are rarely a long-term answer here. There is more on this in grass seed vs turf in Queensland.
Shade and heavy wear together are the hardest job you can give a lawn. Grass in shade grows more slowly, so it repairs damage more slowly. Of our varieties, Sir Walter is the best all-rounder for a shaded yard with kids or a dog (see the best turf for dogs in Queensland). Empire Zoysia recovers quickly from wear in full sun; in shade, expect slower recovery from any variety.
Even so, a dog’s regular track along a shaded fence line will wear through. Put stepping stones or a gravel strip on the track and turf the rest.
Shade-tolerant does not mean shade-loving, so adjust your care in shaded areas.
We would rather tell you now than sell you turf that will die. Under 3 hours of direct sun, or under a dense evergreen canopy, turf will thin out whatever you plant. Better options include:

We grow Sir Walter and Empire Zoysia at Woodford and deliver both across Brisbane and the Sunshine Coast; see our turf supplies in Brisbane page for the areas we cover. Turf is cut to order, so it arrives fresh; see turf delivery for how it works. Measure each area using our guide on how to measure for turf, then enter the numbers in the turf calculator and add a little extra for cutting in around edges and garden beds.
Timing matters more in shade. Turf roots in fastest in the warmer months, so lay shaded areas from spring to autumn when you can. If you are still comparing varieties, our guide on how to choose the right turf covers sun, soil and wear together.
Sir Walter soft-leaf buffalo. Aim for 4 or more hours of direct sun a day, with 3 hours as the bare minimum, and it still grows well in full sun. Empire Zoysia, with medium (40–50%) shade tolerance, is a good second choice for part shade.
Among warm-season lawn grasses, buffalo is the most shade tolerant, followed by zoysia, according to Turf Queensland. Soft-leaf buffalos such as Sir Walter are the usual choice for shaded lawns in Queensland.
Empire Zoysia has medium shade tolerance of 40–50%. Give it at least the 4 hours of direct sun Turf Queensland recommends for shade-tolerant lawns, and more if the light is filtered through trees. In heavy shade it thins out.
No. Sir Walter buffalo is the more shade-tolerant of the two and copes with fewer hours of sun. Empire Zoysia suits part shade and wins on low maintenance and salt tolerance.
No. Buffalo is the most shade-tolerant lawn grass, but it still needs direct sun. Below about 3 hours a day, even Sir Walter will thin out over time.
Not really. Turf Queensland ranks kikuyu below buffalo and zoysia for shade, and it thins out in shaded areas. It suits large, sunny yards. We do not grow kikuyu.
No. Couch is the least shade-tolerant of the common lawn grasses. Wintergreen couch needs at least 7 hours of sun a day, so use it only in open, sunny areas.
It depends on the variety. Turf Queensland recommends at least 4 hours of direct sun for shade-tolerant lawns such as Sir Walter and Empire Zoysia; Sir Walter’s licensor says it can manage on 3. Wintergreen couch needs 7 or more. Midday sun counts most, and winter shadows are longer, so check in winter too.
Usually it is a mix of too little light, tree roots taking the water and nutrients, and fungal disease from damp, shaded leaves. Raise or thin the canopy, rake up fallen leaves, water less often and mow higher. If the spot still gets very little direct sun, mulch it instead.
For SEQ, instant turf is usually the better option. Many shade seed blends are cool-season grasses that struggle in our hot, humid summers, and seed is slow to establish in low light. Instant turf gives you a full cover of a warm-season variety from day one.
Sir Walter buffalo is the best all-rounder of our varieties. Wear recovers more slowly in shade, so put pavers or gravel on your dog’s regular track along the fence.
Spring to autumn, when warm-season grasses grow fastest and root in quickly. Turf can be laid in winter, but in shade it roots slowly, so it needs extra care until the weather warms up.
If your sun audit shows 4 hours or more of direct sun (3 at the very least), Sir Walter is the safe choice. For part shade at the sunnier end, Empire Zoysia is a good low-maintenance option.
