Fine, short couch lawn beside longer, coarser kikuyu-style grass in a sunny Queensland front yard with a grey fence

In the couch vs kikuyu choice for a sunny Brisbane or Sunshine Coast yard, couch is usually the better buy. It is finer and neater, handles wear well, needs less mowing, spreads less aggressively than kikuyu, and Wintergreen couch costs $7.00/m². Kikuyu earns its place on very large, heavy-use or cold inland sites. We grow couch at Woodford and don’t commercially produce kikuyu.

Key facts: couch vs kikuyu at a glance

This table compares the two grasses as they perform in a typical South East Queensland (SEQ) home lawn. The couch column is based on Wintergreen, the couch we grow at Woodford. For the wider picture, including buffalo and zoysia, see how to choose the right turf.

What is couch grass?

Couch (Cynodon dactylon and its hybrids) is a warm-season grass that spreads by runners above the ground (stolons) and below it (rhizomes). It is the grass you see on many Queensland parks, school ovals, golf fairways and estate verges. It loves heat and sun, grows fast from spring to autumn and slows down over winter.

Because couch grows sideways so quickly, it knits together fast after it is laid and repairs worn patches on its own. That same habit is why it creeps into garden beds if you don’t keep an edge on it.

Wintergreen couch

Wintergreen is a selected variety of green couch, originally bred at Windsor in New South Wales. It has a fine leaf and a deep green colour, and it is the couch we grow and cut to order on our farm at Woodford. We rate it for full sun: it needs at least 7 hours of direct sun a day. It also tolerates the common lawn chemicals and herbicides well, which makes weed control simpler.

Wintergreen couch is $7.00/m², the lowest price of the three turf varieties we grow.

Couch pros and cons

Pros

  • A fine, tidy finish that can be mown low for a neat, “bowling green” look.
  • Hard-wearing, with fast recovery from kids, pets and backyard cricket.
  • Handles heat and dry spells well once established.
  • Tolerant of most lawn herbicides, so weeds are easier to deal with.
  • The most economical turf we sell, at $7.00/m².

Cons

  • Poor shade tolerance. Turf Queensland ranks couch as the least shade-tolerant of the common warm-season grasses.
  • Slows down in winter and can go off-colour after frost or long cold spells.
  • Runners invade garden beds unless you edge regularly or install a solid edge.
  • Needs regular mowing and a feed each season to stay dense and green.
  • Can build up thatch over time, so it may need a spring freshen-up (aerating and topdressing).

What is kikuyu?

Kikuyu (Pennisetum clandestinum) is a warm-season grass from the highlands of East Africa. It has a broad, bright green leaf and thick runners that spread above and below ground very quickly. It is common across southern and coastal Australia as a cheap, tough lawn, on sports fields and in paddocks.

Kikuyu pros and cons

Pros

  • Extremely vigorous. It recovers from heavy wear faster than almost any other lawn grass.
  • Holds its colour better than couch in cold weather, which suits cold inland areas such as Toowoomba.
  • Covers large areas quickly and copes with dry spells once established.

Cons (the disadvantages of kikuyu)

  • Very invasive. It pushes into garden beds, under paths and fences, and into the neighbour’s yard.
  • Grows so fast in a wet Queensland summer that you may need to mow twice a week, with plenty of clippings.
  • Coarser leaf and a looser, spongier feel than couch, and it builds thatch quickly if it isn’t mown often.
  • Still a sun-lover: it thins out in shade.
  • Hard to get rid of if you change your mind. Removing it usually takes more than one round of spraying.

Which is better for Queensland conditions?

Both are warm-season grasses that grow well in SEQ. The difference is how they behave in the conditions most Brisbane and Sunshine Coast yards actually have.

Brisbane’s wet summers and dry winters

In a hot, wet summer both grasses grow hard. Kikuyu is the one that gets away from you: miss a mow during a week of storms and it turns into a thick, uneven mat that scalps when you finally cut it. Couch grows fast too, but a weekly mow keeps it under control.

In our mild coastal winters, couch slows down and may lose some colour, most noticeably in frost-prone pockets and the western suburbs. It greens up again as the soil warms in spring. Kikuyu usually holds its colour a little better through winter, but it isn’t needed to keep a good-looking lawn on the coast. See the lawn care overview for seasonal jobs.

Sunshine Coast sand and SEQ clay

On sandy Sunshine Coast soils, water and nutrients drain away quickly. Both grasses will grow in sand, but they need more regular feeding and a good soil layer under the turf to hold moisture. On the heavy clay common in estates around North Lakes, Ipswich and Logan, drainage and compaction matter more than the choice of grass. Good ground preparation is what makes either lawn work, and our site and soil preparation page explains what’s involved.

Kids, dogs and traffic

For a family backyard in full sun, couch handles running, ball games and dogs very well, and it repairs its own worn patches. Kikuyu recovers even faster, which is why it suits very large or heavily used areas. For an ordinary suburban block, couch gives you most of that toughness with a neater finish and much less mowing.

Cost comparison: a 100 m² lawn

Here is what a 100 m² sunny backyard costs in Wintergreen couch from us, using the prices on our product page and calculator.

ItemHow it’s worked outCost
Wintergreen couch turf100 m² × $7.00/m²$700
Delivery (calculator estimate)Delivery estimate shown in our calculator. Check the exact cost for your address when you order$200
Supplied and delivered$900
Laying (optional)$2.50/m² laid, with a $440 minimum. 100 m² × $2.50 = $250, so the $440 minimum applies$440
Supplied, delivered and laid$1,340

A few notes on the figures:

  • The minimum order in our online calculator is 50 m².
  • Order about 5% extra for cutting in around edges. For 100 m² that’s 105 m², which adds $35 of turf.
  • The $440 laying minimum covers up to 176 m², so on small lawns the laying cost per m² works out higher than $2.50.
  • Removing an old lawn, soil and levelling are extra and depend on the site, so we quote those separately. Building a new home? See our front and backyard packages.

We can’t give you a kikuyu price because we don’t grow it. Kikuyu is generally sold as a budget turf too, so if you’re comparing, ask each supplier for the full delivered cost for your area rather than the price per m² alone.

When kikuyu is the better choice

We don’t sell kikuyu, but we’ll still tell you when it’s the right grass. Kikuyu makes sense when:

  • the site is inland and cold (e.g. Toowoomba), where kikuyu holds its colour better than couch through winter;
  • the area is very large or takes constant heavy use, and fast recovery matters more than a fine finish;
  • there are no garden beds nearby for it to invade, and you’re happy to mow often.

A good example is our Clive Berghofer Field rebuild in Toowoomba. Temperatures there range from about 38°C on a summer day to minus 5°C on a winter night, so we switched the field from couch to kikuyu for its year-round colour and performance. On the Darling Downs that was the obvious call. In coastal Brisbane or on the Sunshine Coast, it usually isn’t.

Why we favour Wintergreen couch

We have grown turf at Woodford since 1994. For most full-sun lawns in SEQ, Wintergreen gives you the toughness, fast recovery and low price that people choose kikuyu for, with less mowing and less work keeping it out of the garden.

We’ve backed that on a large scale. On the Grafton Jail Precinct project in northern New South Wales, the original specification was 220,000 m² of kikuyu. We don’t commercially produce kikuyu, and the client couldn’t find a single supplier for that area. We proposed Wintergreen instead at the same price, and it was approved for its availability, cold tolerance, chemical tolerance and recovery on the site’s sports fields. We supplied, delivered and installed all 220,000 m² of it.

Mixed kikuyu and couch lawn: your options

Many older Brisbane lawns end up as a patchwork of couch and kikuyu, often with kikuyu slowly taking over. You have three realistic options.

  1. Live with it. Mow often at one height that suits both, and keep the lawn well fed and watered so it looks even. It won’t be a perfect finish, but it’s the cheapest option.
  2. Manage the edges. Keep kikuyu out of beds and paths with a solid edge and regular trimming. Our grubs, diseases and weeds page covers weed control more generally. We’re not aware of a simple home-lawn spray that removes one grass from the other without also setting back the lawn you want to keep. If you try a product, follow its label exactly.
  3. Start again. Spray out the whole area, allow time for regrowth and spray again (kikuyu often needs more than one round), then strip the old lawn and lay new turf. Laying over the top doesn’t work, because both grasses grow straight back through.

Couch vs buffalo (and zoysia) if the yard isn’t full sun

If your yard gets less than about 7 hours of direct sun, neither couch nor kikuyu is a good fit. Turf Queensland ranks shade tolerance as buffalo first, then zoysia, then kikuyu, seashore paspalum and couch last. If you are weighing kikuyu against a buffalo for a part-shaded yard, see kikuyu vs buffalo.

Frequently asked questions

Which is better, kikuyu or couch?

For most sunny Brisbane and Sunshine Coast home lawns, couch is better. It gives a finer finish, needs less mowing and is easier to keep out of garden beds. Kikuyu is better for cold inland sites and very large, heavily used areas where the fastest possible recovery matters most.

Will kikuyu take over couch grass?

Often, yes. Kikuyu’s thick runners are more aggressive than couch’s, and in a mixed lawn it tends to spread over time, especially where the lawn is mown high or less often. Regular, lower mowing favours couch.

What are the downsides of couch grass?

Couch needs full sun and thins out in shade. It slows down and can lose colour in winter, particularly after frost. Its runners creep into garden beds, and it needs regular mowing and seasonal feeding to stay dense.

What are the disadvantages of kikuyu grass?

Kikuyu is very invasive, grows fast enough in a wet Queensland summer to need mowing up to twice a week, has a coarse leaf, builds thatch quickly and thins out in shade. It is also hard to remove once it is established.

Should I remove couch grass from garden beds?

Yes. Couch runners compete with your plants for water and nutrients and will keep spreading through the bed. Pull or spray it out while it is small, and fit a solid edge between the lawn and the bed so it can’t creep back.

Is couch or kikuyu cheaper to lay in Brisbane?

Both are budget turfs. Our Wintergreen couch is $7.00/m². With the $200 delivery estimate in our calculator, 100 m² comes to about $900 delivered; check the exact delivery cost for your address. We don’t grow kikuyu, so compare full delivered prices from kikuyu suppliers rather than the price per m² alone.

Does couch stay green in a Brisbane winter?

Mostly, in coastal Brisbane. Couch slows down in winter and can lose some colour, most noticeably after frost or in cold, low-lying spots. It greens up again as the soil warms in spring. Keeping it fed in autumn helps it hold colour for longer.

Can I lay couch turf myself?

Yes. Couch is easy to lay on well-prepared ground. On a good site, laying straight from the pallet, an average person lays about 50 m² an hour. Start along the longest straight edge, butt the slabs tightly together and water well straight away.

Is Wintergreen couch any good?

Yes, for sunny lawns. It’s hard-wearing, recovers quickly, handles heat and dry spells once established, tolerates common lawn herbicides and has a fine, deep green leaf. It isn’t suited to shade, as it needs at least 7 hours of direct sun a day.

What type of grass is Wintergreen?

Wintergreen is a green couch grass: a fine-leaf, warm-season variety of couch that spreads by runners. It was bred at Windsor in New South Wales, and we grow it at our Woodford farm.

Wintergreen couch vs Sir Walter: which is better for my yard?

Choose Wintergreen ($7.00/m²) for open, full-sun yards where price and fast recovery matter. Choose Sir Walter buffalo ($15.50/m²) if parts of the yard are shaded or you want a broader, softer-underfoot leaf. Many yards with a shaded side suit Sir Walter better.
