The best turf for dogs in Brisbane and the Sunshine Coast is Sir Walter buffalo for most backyards: soft, hard-wearing and the most shade tolerant of our three turfs. In full sun with a big, active dog, Wintergreen couch recovers fastest. Empire Zoysia suits calmer dogs and less mowing. No turf is urine-proof, so recovery matters most.

What makes a grass dog-friendly in Queensland?

Dogs damage lawns in three ways: wear (running the fence line, the same track to the back door), digging and urine. The best grass for dogs has to handle all three and still cope with South East Queensland’s humid summers, storms and dry winters.

Wear versus recovery

Turf Queensland describes the wear you see as damage minus recovery. Some grasses resist being crushed and torn, and others get damaged but grow back quickly. Its summary of Queensland wear trials found green couch performed best in full sun, while newer buffalo varieties, including Sir Walter, out-performed couch and kikuyu in 50% shade (Turf Queensland: Wear in lawns).

Runners do the repairs

Buffalo spreads with thick above-ground runners (stolons). Couch and zoysia also have below-ground runners (rhizomes), which help them regrow after heavy wear. The faster the runners grow, the faster a worn track or urine spot closes over, and in SEQ that is from late spring to early autumn.

Hard-wearing turf types: which is toughest?

The most hard-wearing turf is the one that suits your sun. Here is how our three hard-wearing turf types rank for kids and dogs:

Your yardMost hard-wearing choiceWhy
Full sun, heavy playWintergreen couchToughest and fastest to recover in full sun; lowest cost per m²
Part shade from the house, fences or treesSir Walter buffaloHolds its density in shade, where couch thins and wears through

Our three picks for dog owners

Sir Walter buffalo: is buffalo good for dogs?

Yes, for most yards. Sir Walter buffalo has a soft, broad leaf that is comfortable to lie on, a dense mat that stands up to paws and thick runners that repair worn patches. It also copes with the shade from fences and houses that couch can’t. Be aware that Turf Queensland doesn’t recommend soft-leaf buffalo for heavy-traffic areas in full sun, because it recovers by growing new runners, which takes time. That makes Sir Walter the pick for part-shade yards and dogs with moderate energy.

Wintergreen couch: fastest recovery in full sun

If your yard gets sun all day and you have a big dog that runs laps, choose Wintergreen couch. It is very hard-wearing and repairs quickly, but it needs at least seven hours of direct sun and regular mowing in summer. At $7.00/m² it is also the most affordable way to turf a large run.

Empire Zoysia: calm dogs, less mowing

Empire Zoysia forms a dense, tough sward that suits a sunny yard and a calmer dog. It needs far less mowing than couch and handles moderate shade. Its wear recovery is good for a zoysia, but it is slower than couch or buffalo to close a bare or urine-burnt spot, so a dog that digs or wears a daily track will leave marks for longer. For a side-by-side of the two $15.50/m² turfs, see Empire Zoysia vs Sir Walter buffalo.

What about TifTuf, kikuyu and artificial grass?

TifTuf is a hybrid couch with a strong reputation for drought and wear tolerance, and it is a sound choice in full sun. We don’t grow it; our Wintergreen couch fills the same full-sun, high-wear role. Kikuyu spreads and regrows vigorously, but it invades garden beds, struggles in shade and needs frequent mowing in a Queensland summer. Our kikuyu vs buffalo comparison goes into the detail.

Artificial grass never needs to recover, but it gets very hot in full sun and holds urine smell unless it is hosed regularly. Many owners keep a small gravel or mulch toilet area and turf the rest.

Decision guide: sun, dog size and activity

  • Seven or more hours of sun, large or very active dog: Wintergreen couch.
  • Shade from fences, trees or the house for part of the day: Sir Walter buffalo. Our shade-tolerant turf guide shows how to check your sun.
  • Full sun, small or calm dog, low-maintenance goal: Empire Zoysia.
  • Mixed yard: use two varieties, for example couch in the sunny back run and Sir Walter down the shaded side.

Why dog urine kills grass

Dog urine is loaded with nitrogen and salts. Diluted at the edges it acts like fertiliser, but concentrated in the centre it scorches leaf and roots, leaving a straw-coloured patch with a lush green ring. US university turf researchers note damage is worse when soil is dry, grass isn’t actively growing and temperatures are high, and that female dogs tend to cause more concentrated spots because they squat in one place (NC State Extension).

The green ring is the giveaway: grub and disease damage doesn’t have it. If you aren’t sure, check our guide to grubs, diseases and weeds.

How to fix dog urine spots on a Queensland lawn

  1. Flush the spot. Soak it with a bucket or hose to wash the salts out of the root zone. Do this before any repair.
  2. Rake out dead grass. Remove the dead leaf and thatch so the surrounding runners can grow in.
  3. Top up the soil. Add a thin layer of sandy loam or topdressing, level with the lawn, and water it in.
  4. Let the runners fill it, or plug it. In the warm months, healthy couch and buffalo grow back over a small spot on their own; zoysia takes longer. For bigger patches, cut a plug of the same variety from a less visible edge of your lawn and press it in firmly.
  5. Water and wait. Keep the patch moist until it knits, and keep the dog off it for a couple of weeks.

Spots made from late spring to early autumn fill quickly. In winter, warm-season grasses barely grow, so repairs usually wait until spring. Don’t reseed with fescue or ryegrass: these cool-season grasses struggle in SEQ summer heat, look different from the lawn around them and tend to die out.

If the whole lawn is thin, patchy or tired rather than spotted, our lawn care services team can assess it and bring it back.

Preventing urine burn and wear

  • Water the spot soon after your dog goes, or train them to use a mulched or gravel toilet area.
  • Water the whole lawn deeply in hot weather. Damage is worst on dry soil.
  • Keep fresh water available and ask your vet before trying supplements.
  • Put pavers or stepping stones on the fence-line run, and rotate play areas where you can.

Laying new turf when you have a dog: the first six weeks

New turf is most vulnerable before its roots knit in, so keep the dog off it with a temporary fence or walk them on a lead. Water it as it establishes (see watering new turf), and hold the first mow until the rolls can’t be lifted (when to mow new turf), then open the lawn up gradually. Our starter care and maintenance plan covers watering, feeding and mowing through the first six weeks. Laying it yourself? Follow our guide on how to lay turf. If you’d rather it was done for you, our turf installation team handles the preparation, laying and rolling.

From stadium fields to backyards

We have grown turf at our Woodford farm since 1994, and wear is our everyday business. Our sports work includes the drainage upgrade of the Metricon Stadium training field at Carrara and the turfing works at the Samford Sports Precinct. The same rule applies at home: match the grass to the sun and give it time to recover.

Frequently asked questions

What grass is most resistant to dog urine?

No grass is urine-proof. The difference is how fast it grows back, and in warm weather couch and buffalo cover a burnt spot sooner than zoysia.

Is Sir Walter good for dogs?

Yes, especially where fences, trees or the house shade part of the yard. For an open, full-sun yard and a dog that runs all day, Wintergreen couch is the tougher choice.

Zoysia or buffalo for dogs in Queensland?

Buffalo for most dog owners, because it takes shade and grows back over worn spots sooner. Zoysia rewards a sunny yard and a calm dog with less mowing. Both cost $15.50/m².

How do I neutralise dog urine on my lawn?

Dilute it. A bucket of water on the spot soon after your dog goes washes the salts past the roots, which is more reliable than any powder or spray.

Do dog rocks work?

We haven’t seen good independent evidence that they do. US university turf researchers found no scientific support for similar dietary additives sold to prevent urine damage. Talk to your vet before changing your dog’s water or diet.

Can I lay new turf if I have a dog?

Yes. Fence the new lawn off or take your dog out on a lead until the rolls have rooted and can’t be lifted, then let them back on gradually.

What can I put down instead of grass for dogs?

Gravel, mulch or pavers work well for a toilet spot or a fence-line track. Keep turf for the areas where the family plays and relaxes.

What is the toughest grass for a backyard?

It depends on your sun. In a sunny backyard with heavy play, green couch is the toughest we grow. Where the house, fences or trees cast shade, Sir Walter buffalo lasts longer, because couch thins in shade.
