What the coast does to a lawn

Coolum's beachside streets are built on sand that drains fast and holds little water or fertiliser. Salt carried on the onshore breeze can brown the tips of fine-leaf grasses, and wind dries out new turf faster than you would expect. Further back, around Peregian Springs and the foot of Mount Coolum, the soil is often compacted fill from the building work. Either way, the lawn needs a good soil layer underneath and a variety that tolerates heat and dry spells.

Why Empire Zoysia Suits Coolum

For a sunny beachside yard, zoysia is hard to beat.

Empire Zoysia: heat, salt air and less mowing

Empire Zoysia grows densely and slowly, holds its colour in heat and dry spells, and copes with coastal air. It costs $15.50/m². If you have been searching for another zoysia by name, Empire Zoysia is the zoysia we grow.

Sir Walter buffalo: when the yard is shaded

Where a house, fence or pandanus shades the lawn for much of the day, Sir Walter ($15.50/m²) is the better choice.

Wintergreen couch: open areas on a budget

Wintergreen couch ($7.00/m²) suits large, full-sun areas where cost matters most. It has a finer leaf and is less tolerant of salt spray on the beachfront.

Establishing New Turf in Coolum Sand

Four steps to get new turf established on the Coolum coast.

Build up the base

Level the sand, spread underlay soil on top and firm it with a roller, so the turf has a stable, water-holding base.

Lay on a calm morning

Wind and afternoon heat dry turf edges fast. Lay early, butt the joints tight, and don't leave rolls in the sun.

Water little and often

Sand drains quickly, so water short and often at first. Follow our watering schedule for new turf, then move to deeper, less frequent watering.

Mow high at first
